Ørsted has been awarded the German Sustainability Award for its Osonic-technology, that uses high-pressure jets to temporarily reduce soil resistance, allowing the monopile to sink smoothly into the soil under its own weight, cutting installation noise by as much as 99 %. The technology is an alternative to pile diving, which is the conventional method for installing offshore wind monopile foundations. In 2024, Ørsted successfully piloted the Osonic-technology at its Gode Wind 3 Offshore Wind Farm in Germany, with noise produced only slightly exceeding ambient levels in this area of the North Sea.
In announcing the award, the jury said: “The method not only enables significantly quieter but also potentially faster and more cost-effective installation of offshore wind foundations as additional noise protection measures are no longer necessary. In addition, it opens up further potential for resource conservation and CO₂ reduction through the possibility of lighter foundation constructions.”
